Do your work, then step back

“Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.” – Lao-Tsu

We wrapped up the Hinsdale project this week, and had that bittersweet feeling that comes once a challenge is completed as we pulled out of the jobsite for the last time.

Not only did the crew put in the extra hours to make sure we delivered on time, we also did some incredible good for the environment.

Thanks to the commitment of our client and our General Contractor (Wolf Pack Development – thanks guys!), we were able to:

– Recycle over 2 tons of metal

– Divert over 3 tons of roofing shingles from the landfill to be recycled into asphalt for road paving

– Preserve more than 80 trees worth of lumber for reuse

We have proudly done our work, now its time to step back.  On to the next one!

Sal’s Last Day

From the moment Sal stepped on site, I knew we had a winner. And today, on his last day, he reminded the whole crew why that was. From start to finish, I’d challenge anyone out there to display the consistent dedication and commitment that Sal brought onsite every day. Sal came to us with decades of leadership and trades experience  under his belt as both an industry and military veteran. We’ve been very fortunate to have him on our team.

Sal has a great attitude, has been willing to do whatever it took to get the job done right, and always made sure that quality was at the forefront of his work. He’s infinitely dependable, and served as a trusted mentor to our junior crew members. His enthusiasm, craftsmanship, and belief in POC’s mission carried through in everything he did.

Sal’s impact and contribution to our company only reinforced our commitment to hiring our country’s military veterans whenever possible. They’ll have some big shoes to fill, but I feel confident the next generation can reach the bar he set.

I could go on, but as Sal would say, “Enough talk, we’ve got work to do.”

Thank you, Sal.

Be well,

The POC Family

Not responsible for lost or stolen items

This message was on a sign posted in the shop where I took my truck to have some work done this week. What effect did this sign have on my experience? I had to clear everything of value out of my truck and move it into my tiny loaner car because they couldn’t assure me that my vehicle and it’s contents would be secure in their care.

It’s a sign we see all the time, so often that it’s become the standard. A norm we’ve resigned ourselves to accept since we rarely have any other option. Thank you litigation!

Seems like a tough sell, though. You want me to trust you enough to do business with you, but you advertise that I can’t count on you or your employees to treat my belongings with respect while I do business with you.

How about this for a disclaimer: We take full responsibility for the work we do, and the effects of that work on the people we do business with. We want to be known for the experience people have when they work with us, because our only standard is excellence. Your project, your home, and your trust are in good hands when you do business with us.

That’s the kind of company I like to do business with. Let’s make that the new standard.

What we’re thankful for

Happy Thanksgiving from the POC family! We’re taking a little time off to share the holiday with those we love and celebrate all the wonderful things we have to be thankful for.

This time also reminds us that some are having a different experience this holiday season. 11 days ago, we were down in Wilmington, IL salvaging some beautiful vintage door hardware and original slate chalkboards from the soon to be demolished Booth Central Elementary School. 2 hours after we left, that area was hit by a tornado.

While only time can heal after an event like this, we’d like to help by donating half the profit from the items salvaged to the efforts of rebuilding after the storm. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the storm and who are healing and rebuilding at this time.

Peace,
The POC Family

Why we’re here

Welcome to the new home of Pursuit of Consciousness. This site will continue to evolve as we share our story about what we do, how we do it, and why we do it. We believe the most important part of that is the “why.” So the one thing we’ll promise is that in everything we do, we will do our best to live out why we’re here, while we’re here.

Why we’re here

To reduce the amount of natural resources consumed by humanity’s expansion. To extend the lifecycle of usable materials, and preserve the history, character, and craftsmanship of timeless architectural treasures.

To demonstrate the power of business to do incredible good, all while providing the opportunity for our heroes to prosper themselves and their families, and enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of consciousness.

To be a beacon of truth, value, and character for other businesses to follow. To be ridiculously idealistic in the way we treat everyone we come in contact with, and serve as a leader in the evolution of business to its highest function.

Make it better,
The POC Family
